Coron Pere & Fils, Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes, Burgundy, France 2003
Volnay lies roughly in the center of the Cote de Beaune, bordered by Pommard to the Northeast and Monthelie to the West, and Mersault to the South. The Southeastern exposed vineyards produce only red wines and 26 premier Crus. The soil is extremely thin, chalky, and high in calcium, which yield the lightest and most delicate wines. The altitude of the vineyards goes from 230 to 370 meters. The clos de Chenes is next to Monthelie, just above the Caillerets.
100% Pinot Noir, the fermentation takes place in wooden vats for 3-4 weeks, after which they have aged in barrels for 15-18 months before being bottled. Nice aromas of red berries, violets, and some pepper. A young Volnay Clos des Chenes will be perfect with poultry or roasted meat.
