Domaine Lalande, Les Haut de Lalande Cabernet Sauvignon, France, 2009
Domaine Lalande consists of a great diversity of terrains: the vines are planted on the sloping hills opposite each other. Thus one part of the domaine is oriented to the West, while the other is to the East and South East. In the South, the canal forms a natural border to the domaine. The tops of these slopes have limestone and are marked by erosion, mostly due to the wind. At the bottom of these slopes the soil is a little deeper and the land is more sheltered from the wind. Thanks to this diversity, numerous grape varieties are able to be cultivated, thus enabling the production of a very rich range of wines.
The vineyard, which stretches out along the Canal du Midi, was created at the same time as this historical canal in the 18th century, and indeed housed one of the most famous architects of the time who designed the plans for the Canal du Midi. The property at that time consisted of 2000 Hectares but it was divided after the revolution. Pierre Degroote and Bernard Montariol decided to buy this vineyard in 1996. The area of vines then was just 125 Hectares. Since then, other neighbouring vineyards were bought to make it a total today of 215 Hectares. The previous proprietors renewed the grape varieties in 1980, therefore the vineyard has been growing these noble varieties for more than 20 years.
The cuvée « Haut de Lalande » results from a strict selection of vines grown under stringent conditions and to stringent specifications. Only the blends of top quality varieties are used by the Haut de Lalande: merlot, cabernet, syrah, petit verdot for the reds. Not to mention, the label is quite elegant.
